Deep-rooted perennial alfalfa can co-exist in annual grain crops, to prevent salinity and to sequester carbon into deep soil.

B.Sc.Ag, M.Sc.Food. Food processing and marketing:
First true raspberry wine vinegar, featured at the Winnipeg Chefs' Assoc annual dinner. First saskatoon berry product export to Asia 1999 and in Japan Air's in-flight catalog. First winery in Manitoba 1999. First Prairie grown raspberry, blackcurrant, honey mead, grape, haskap wines sold in wine stores. Rigby Orchards raspberry wine was served as the dessert wine at Queen Elizabeth's golden jubilee banquet at Manitoba Legislature in 2002, followed by case orders to Rideau Hall.
Soil Salinity Prevention:
In 2026, the Rigby farm shall continue over two decades of the practices of no fall tillage, intact fall mulch, no fallow, no ionic nitrogen, no fungicides, and no non-selective herbicides to ensure thriving vegetation and soil everywhere. These disciplines succeeded in reversing the white salt salination that had appeared in low patches in the 1990's, first time since the ice age. That salinity had followed 3 decades of intensive chemical farming, after 8 decades of traditional grain farming since our family homesteaded in 1882. Now, except in the tracks on the lane, our farm is unique in the area, with again no bare saline patches anywhere.
Crop Sanitation:
Not using the herbicides designed to poison plant enzymes to inhibit the plant's immune response to pathogens, resulting in plant death due to pathogen invasion, avoids the buildup of pathogen populations in the soil and its consequence of next year crop disease epidemic. This discipline allows for frequent planting of similar crop species without need to rotate to avoid diseases.
Net Zero GHG Farming in 2026:
Not using any chemical nitrogen concentrates avoids soil bacteria utilizing the excess nitrogen for growth, via digesting ancient soil organic matter to obtain energy thru respiration, having the consequence of emitting the GHG carbon dioxide.
Not applying any nitrogen fertilizers also avoids any conversion of those chemicals into the very potent GHG nitrous oxide.
Grow a brassica oilseed in companion with a N-fixing pulse, or soybean without mycorrhizae-killing glyphosate, to supply oil as fuel for old diesel engines.
Add an annual clover, and italian ryegrass which grows vegetative in the summer and then also winter kills, as companions within annual grain crops. These continue growing in fall after crop harvest, the clover fixing nitrogen via symbiotic rhizobia, and the ryegrass increasing populations of free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria. This nitrogen supports next year's grain crop. Both also continue feeding associated mycorrhizae thru fall sequestering more carbon out of the atmosphere into enduring glomalin.
By avoiding carbon oxidative pulverizing tillage and thus wind erosion emission of GHG CO2, by not using the translocating to roots fungicides and glyphosate that are toxic to mycorrhizae, and by also growing mycorrhizae-associating crops every summer and into fall, the net sequestration of the GHG carbon dioxide into enduring glomalin proteins in soil is hastened, to help reduce excess climate warming.
Am signatory to Climate Change Canada's "Net Zero Challenge" for GHG.
Possibly the first Net GHG Sequestering Grain Farm!
